Traumatic stress reactions –
what to look for
Examples of Traumatic Stress Symptoms

- Avoiding thinking or talking about the illness, injury, or hospital experience, or things associated with it

- Displaying less interest in usual activities

- Feeling emotionally numb or detached from others

Avoiding people, places and things: "I try to avoid driving on the roads near the hospital." OR "I block it out - try not to think about it." OR "I try to stay away from things that remind me of it."

Feeling emotionally numb: "I can't remember the last time I laughed or even had a good cry. It's like I can no longer feel anything."
